Greg & Cherie choose ambitious projects for their first forge experience at LLForge
Greg chose to make a tactical knife from 5160 steel with rough forged finish and maple burl scales. Cherie chose to make a bowl, (approximately 24" in diameter), and stand from 18 guage steel. We heated and hammered all day until we were all exhausted. What awesome people to work with! They made it a truly rewarding day for all of us. Although completely spent, I felt as if a breath of new life had been breathed into me. They plan to return to the forge to complete the

An awesome day at the forge! Elijah and Katrina put their hearts into forging wall hooks!
Elijah and Katrina knocked it out of the park. Each of them made a hand forged wall hook from 3/8" square stock. They learned basic blacksmithing techniques, drawing out, twisting, drifting and punching and more. It was another very successful Learn to Forge experience. Thank you both for making my day..... 15th Birthday Gift A Day at the Forge
Will surprised his son Wilbur with a day at LLForge, Learn to Forge Experience. Wilbur's choice of projects was a damascus knife. A tall order indeed for a first forge experience. Wibur and his father set out cutting and cleaning the 4' X 2" 1095 and 15N20 steel to be used in the billet. Wilbur stepped up to the forge like a seasoned pro and began his first heat and welded the 5lb billet with the treadle hammer. After the initial weld was set Wilbur then manned the forge

Learn to Forge Let's make a pair of Tongs.
Half day project at LLForge, "Learn to Forge". Brian and Mike Bailey made a pair of tongs Finished tongs half day session project Believe it or not, this is the first pair of tongs that I've made at the forge. Usually tongs are one of the first projects a beginning blacksmith will attempt. Another great addition to the list of forge projects that can be made at LLForge, "Learn to Forge". These were made from two 16" lengths of 1/2" square stock.

Let's make a coat rack! A father daughter day at the forge.
Ben and his daughter Melana at the forge making their first forged project. Working as a team they forge out a three hook coat rack. Using a traditional coal fired forge and blacksmithing techniques, drawing out, twisting, drifting, punching, hot cutting, scrolling, riveting, and more they make a beautiful hand crafted coat rack they can both be proud of for years to come. Thank you Ben and Melana for a wonderful and successful day at LLForge, "Learn to Forge" blacksmithi

Safety and Innovation
As a blacksmith/bladesmith it is often necessary to make and alter tools and equipment to get the job done. Altering equipment to do a task that it wasn't built or designed for can be rewarding and cost effective, but may aslo be potentially dangerous. Recently I converted a log splitter into a forge press. After watching countless youtube videos I set to the task to make a forge press for a fractoin of what I could buy one for. Although the log splitter can be converted

Nakiri knife....not as easy as it looks
I found out the hard way that making what seems to be a simple knife, is not so simple. Traditionally, Japanese knives were single bevel, and featured the same grind with three key parts: the shinogi surface, the urasuki, and the uraoshi. It wasn’t until Japan began modernizing in the late 19th century and early 20th century — and when they began incorporating western culture in to theirs — that they started crafting double beveled knives. The Japanese have continued to for
